Reliance Jio, one of the leading telecommunications conglomerates is seeking to invest more than Rs. 1K crore in cable landing station in West Bengal. The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee said that the Reliance Jio Infocomm will make this mammoth investment in the state. The telecom giant, Reliance is likely to invest in setting up a cable landing station in the visually attractive port town of Digha. 

With this establishment, it provides a boost to the sub-sea broadband connectivity links of the state with different Asian and European markets. Moreover, it also aids in attracting more tech investments into the state of West Bengal. As a result, it helps in creating copious employment opportunities for job seekers across the state.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal said, ‘Reliance Jio has agreed to set up a cable landing station in Digha, and will invest over Rs 1,000 crore,’ She made this announcement after taking part in a state cabinet meeting organized on Wednesday at the state secretariat. The company has placed a bid to construct the landing station and the state government of West Bengal has granted them adequate land.

Some of the renowned officials of the state government took part in the cabinet meeting. They said that the sub-sea cable landing station is likely to transform the state into a core hub for various sectors like IT and ITES. This helps the state government to acquire massive investments and eventually creates employment.

Rajiva Sinha, the Chief Secretary of West Bengal said, ‘Our IT and ITES data centers would be benefited. Our international connectivity with Singapore, Italy, and Malaysia will get a boost. Such stations have been set up in Chennai and Mumbai. With the station in West Bengal, the entire eastern region, including Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, would be benefited.’

The final decision regarding the involvement of Reliance Jio in the venture was taken during the state cabinet meeting. The government is seeking to establish a deep-sea port near the Digha landing station which was proposed earlier. With the help of subsea cables, it renders critical global telecommunication links between nations and the cable systems. Most of the industry experts anticipate a swift transformation of IT and ITeS sectors in West Bengal upon the setup and commencement of Jio’s cable landing station’s operations.

Banerjee said, ‘We have been trying to come up with a deep-sea port at Tajpur. We had requested the Centre for a joint project but it didn’t materialize. So the state has decided to go ahead with the project with another partner that would be decided through a tender.’
