Netflix, one of the most popular OTT platforms has rolled out a new mobile feature recently. The new mobile feature of Netflix automatically downloads show recommendations and movies depending on the viewer’s history. Netflix has been striving hard or improving the download functionality by rolling out this new feature. The ‘Downloads for You’ is the newly added feature to Netflix that aids users uncover more interesting content.
The company announced that the new feature has been launched across the globe for Android users, as of now. Based on the preferences and tastes of the users, storage amount, and more, Netflix’s new feature will download shows and movie recommendations automatically. The company said in a statement that the new feature will be tested soon on iOS devices.
The users who are planning to access this feature need to opt-in on their mobile phones. The users must select the amount of storage space they want to allocate to download entertaining content on the devices for each of the 5 profiles in their account. Netflix stated that this storage space won’t be utilized for the movies or shows that are downloaded manually. It will be available in the downloads tab separately.
This feature will be available on the downloads tab in the Netflix app on your mobile phone. The users need to set the storage space i.e., 1 GB, 3GB, or 5GB based on their requirement and use. If space is more then, it indicates more Netflix recommendations will be downloaded. Despite the full catalog of Netflix is available through this feature, few downloads will be constrained due to licensing restrictions.
In July 2018, Netflix launched the Smart Downloads feature that deletes downloaded episodes of a TV show once the user has finished watching it. Later, the next episode will be downloaded automatically. Similar to that feature, the new Downloads for You feature will function only when the user is connected to a Wi-Fi network. The company has been seeking to enhance content discovery. In the previous month, the company said that it will launch Shuffle Play for all its worldwide subscribers in the first half of the year post testing it for several months.
The chief operating officer and chief product officer Greg Peters of Netflix said that the users sometimes get to the service and they are not sure what they want to watch. This way, they had the chance to try new mechanisms to assist our members in that specific state, said the CEO of Netflix at the earnings conference call of the company in January 2021.
YouTube Music, the music streaming service of YouTube provides a smart download feature to its premium users. With this functionality, it automatically downloads up to 500 songs for offline listening. The main app of YouTube provides download suggestions to users. However, it doesn’t download the videos automatically.
