Reliance Jio Becomes Largest Telecom Operator in Gujarat

Reliance Jio, the popular telecom operator in the country has become the market leader officially with the highest subscriber base in Gujarat. As per the latest telecom subscription report for December 2020, Reliance Jio currently holds 2.54 crore mobile subscribers in the state. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India [TRAI] has released the detailed report recently. The telecom company acquired 3.36 lakh, additional subscribers, in the Gujarat circle in December 2020 itself and currently holds a market share of 37.5 percent in the state.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea Limited [Vi] that had been the market leader for more than 25 years lost its subscribers during the same period. Vi has lost almost 1.62 subscribers, as per the December report. In Gujarat, the market share of Vi is 37.01 percent with 2.5 crore mobile subscribers. In December 2020, Gujarat acquired some 2 lakh new mobile subscribers. Bharti Airtel also acquired 2.55 lakh, new subscribers, in the same month with a total of 1.11 crore mobile subscribers. On the other hand, the state-owned telco, BSNL had lost 2.2 lakh subscribers.

Some of the sources in a good position confirmed that Reliance Jio has turned out to become the preferred telecom operator in the state as it offers affordable tariff plans. Parimal Nathwani, the director, corporate affairs at Reliance Industries Limited has posted a tweet. It reads, ‘Jio has become the leading operator in Gujarat with a 2.54 cr subscriber base and a 37.51 percent customer market share.’ The tweet further reads, ‘With the best network and affordable rate, this has been achieved in less than 4.5 years to beat Vodafone Idea, which was a market leader in the state for 25 years.’ 

Vodafone Idea denied commenting on the decreasing market share in Gujarat and the company’s plans to regain lost ground. Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited said in its Q3 result announcement that ‘Jio will continue to accelerate the rollout of its digital platforms and indigenously developed next-generation 5G stack and make it affordable and available everywhere.’ On the whole, all the telecom operators in India lost about 14.21 lakh subscribers pan India.

The total subscriber base in India declined marginally to 115 crores in December 2020 with MTNL, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL.
