Micromax Announces Comeback in The Indian Smartphone Market With “In”

Micromax, the Indian smartphone manufacturing company has rolled out a new sub-brand ‘In’ in recent times. The company has geared up to represent India in the smartphone segment. With the launch of the new sub-brand ‘In’, the company is planning to make a tactical re-entry into the smartphone market. Rahul Sharma, the co-founder of Micromax announced that the firm has made its re-entry into the smartphone segment through a short video on the microblogging website.

In the short video, Sharma shared the entire journey of the company. After the entry of Chinese smartphone makers in the Indian market, the company has put an end. On Twitter, Micromax India posted a tweet that reads, ‘We’re #INForIndia with #INMobiles! What about you? #IndiaKeLiye #BigAnnouncement #MicromaxIsBack #AatmanirbharBharat.’ The company hasn’t disclosed any more further details officially during the announcement. However, the Geekbench listing comes with a possible look at the first device from the new Micromax range.

In 2014, Micromax was in the 2nd position in the segment of smartphone maker in India. Now, due to the entry of Chinese brands, Micromax walked out of the Indian smartphone market. The main reason behind the ruination of homegrown smartphone manufacturing companies since 2016 is that they couldn’t launch 4G smartphones at reasonable prices. Still, after the Government’s initiative for an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ [Self-reliant India], Micromax has now made its comeback with its ‘In’ range of smartphones.

The information about the first Micromax smartphone under the ‘In’ branding is not yet revealed. Sharma also didn’t disclose the estimated launch date of the smartphone in the country. Meanwhile, the firm has confirmed to invest Rs. 500 crore on expanding local manufacturing and research and development [R&D] operations as it gears up a comeback plan in the smartphone market of the country.

Sharma further added, ‘The new PLI scheme balances out foreign and Indian players. The support of 6 percent is big and with the government support, we will be able to fight Chinese brands fiercely on the pricing front.’ He further said that the internal accumulations are right for the plan. The firm will raise money at the appropriate time.

The India Cellular and Electronics Association [ICEA], the industry body that represents the leading mobile phone manufacturers such as Apple, Lava, Foxconn, Wistron, and more said the companies have decided to make investments worth Rs. 11000 crore under the PLI scheme. They will outshine manufacturing estimates by 2 to 2.5 times.

The Indian Government has rolled out the PLI scheme in the electronics manufacturing segment on 1st April 2020 under the National Policy on Electronics [NPE] 2019 that plans to position India as a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing [ESDM]. As of now, most of the smartphone manufacturing firms are seeking to launch smartphones with 5G connectivity.

In such a situation, we need to wait whether Micromax rolls out its smartphones with 5G connectivity under its sub-brand ‘in’. In that case, the company might sell the devices at an aggressive price range. It seems that the company might give a tough competition to the remaining smartphone firms in the Indian smartphone market.
