Airtel Launches 4G Services in Andaman Nicobar Islands

Bharti Airtel, the popular Indian telecommunications provider has launched ‘Ultra-Fast 4G’ services in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday. Airtel has turned out to become the first private telecom service company to launch high-speed 4G services in the islands. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi inaugurated the Submarine Optical Fibre Cable connectivity between Chennai and Andaman and Nicobar Islands today as part of the CANI project.

The Chairman of Bharti Airtel, Sunil Bharti Mittal said in an official statement that the fiber link in such a region will be a turning point. The statement further reads, ‘The fiber link will be a game-changer for the region and unlock the true potential of 4G and even 5G in future for customers. We hope the Department of Telecom will accelerate the deployment of USOF for building such infrastructure backbone to complement the efforts of telecom operators to bridge the digital divide.’

Bharti Airtel has become the initial telecom firm in India to offer extremely fast 4G services in the union territory. The lightning-fast speed offered by Airtel’s 4G network will render excellent digital experience to the tourists and it’s subscribers on Andaman and Nicobar islands. The Chairman of the telecom company also thanked the Indian Prime Minister for launching this significant digital infrastructure. 

The Submarine Optical Fibre Cable connects Chennai and Port Blair, as per the reports. The state-run BSNL has implemented this DoT-funded project within two years. This cable renders 400 Gbps of internet speed between the two key cities. The cable that has been set up through this project provides an internet speed of 200 Gbps between Port Blair and the remaining islands. The cable that has been set up undersea is available for a distance of about 2313 kilometers. The total distance will connect 7 islands of Andaman excluding the capital city Port Blair. The total of 7 islands includes Long Island, Swaraj Deep, Rangat, Kamorta, Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, and Greater Nicobar.

At the inauguration event, Narendra Modi stated that Andaman and Nicobar Islands play a vital role in the nation’s development. It will be further increased as per the Act-East Policy of the country. Modi also said that this project will enhance internet connectivity in the islands. This, in turn, helps the people residing in the islands to utilize copious digital options like net banking, online education, e-commerce, and other telemedicine resources. Moreover, highspeed internet connectivity increases tourism by attracting a lot of tourists eventually increases employment opportunities to millions of people.

Modi further said that this move will make other telecom operators show their interest in providing telecom and broadband services on the islands. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited [BSNL] has already announced to revise its mobile plans in Andaman Nicobar Islands. The state-based telecom service provider mentioned that the data benefits on specific plans have been improved by about 8 times.  

Bharti Airtel has been rendering it’s services to the customers in Andaman and Nicobar Islands since 2005. With the launch of the ultra-fast 4G network in the islands, Airtel is seeking to reinforce it’s bonding with the subscribers on the islands. In the imminent future, Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be developed as a key hub of Port Led Development, said Prime Minister Modi. 

Besides Airtel, some of the most popular telecom service providers in India include Reliance Jio, Vodafone, Idea, and others.
